But here’s the thing: medieval letterforms didn’t just appear fully formed. They evolved. Around the sixth century, monks started turning sharp angles into curves because curved letters could be written faster. That style became uncial (Latin for “one inch high”). By the eighth century, they compressed those letters vertically to fit more text on expensive parchment. Half uncial was born. Efficiency drove design. Still does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The most notable manuscripts came from Ireland and Scotland\u2014places where the writing system was already influenced by runic forms. Those narrow, angular shapes left their mark on everything that followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
